Characteristics of Metallurgical Wastewater

Metallurgical wastewater mainly comes from drainage of circulating cooling systems and rainwater. It typically features large fluctuations in water volume and water quality. The pollutants are mainly inorganic, combined with small amounts of organic substances, resulting in poor biodegradability. The wastewater usually has high total hardness and alkalinity and contains small traces of floating oil. To achieve energy saving and emission reduction, many plants now collect comprehensive wastewater for centralized treatment and reuse as process water.

Limitations of Traditional Treatment Methods

Conventional processes such as coagulation–sedimentation–filtration mainly remove turbidity and temporary hardness but fail to effectively reduce dissolved organic matter. As a result:

  • COD remains high in the treated water;
  • Membrane systems (UF/RO) face organic fouling, shortening membrane lifespan;
  • Deep water reuse becomes limited.
