Frequently Asked Questions

The major challenges are coating and abrasion. High-consistency pulp is abrasive and tends to coat pH electrodes and flow meter liners. Electromagnetic flow meters (magmeters) with ceramic liners for superior abrasion resistance and non contact ultrasonic level transmitters to avoid contact with sticky stock are recommended.

Continuous conductivity monitoring of black liquor evaporators is essential. Precise measurement helps control the concentration of recovery chemicals total dissolved solids, maximizing the efficiency of the recovery boiler and minimizing energy usage while ensuring the optimal density for combustion.

While dedicated consistency transmitters exist, density measurement using a Coriolis mass flow meter can provide highly stable and accurate data correlated to pulp consistency. This is preferred in high-value streams as it is non-contact with the slurry and provides diagnostic data on pipe fouling.

Magnetic flow meters with PTFE or PFA liners and Hastelloy C electrodes are the standard. This material combination provides maximum resistance to highly aggressive bleaching agents (e.g., chlorine dioxide), ensuring long-term measurement integrity and personnel safety.

Vortex flow meters are highly effective for steam measurement. They provide accurate volume or mass flow of saturated steam, allowing operators to tightly control energy consumption in the dryers and accurately calculate utility costs per ton of paper produced.

Guided wave radar (GWR ) is recommended. The probe acts as a guide for the microwave signal, making the measurement reliable even during heavy agitation, turbulence, or significant foaming, providing continuous level control.

A non-contact moisture sensor(often using microwave or infrared technology) is required. This device scans the moving paper web to provide an instantaneous, continuous measurement of moisture content, which is crucial for achieving final product specifications and optimizing energy use.

A low range absolute or vacuum pressure transmitter is needed. This instrument measures the pressure relative to a perfect vacuum, providing the precise control feedback necessary to maintain the desired vacuum levels that draw water out of the paper sheet.
